My partner and l were given a genuine rabbit pelt to use for a blanket for Benny Boo Bear our cats (l am aware of the moral arguments surrounding fur and agree with Registered User all of them. The pelt was given in good faith from someone from a different Joined: Thursday, 10th of June 2010, 09:30:25 era, and was accepted so as not to cause offence and so as not to make a Posts: 404 nice person feel bad).
Our cats have had a strange reaction to Viewed 11817 times it: they were very wiery of it at first, and now they have started to nip
at it whilst shaking it. They also take turns to drag it off and hide it
incorners, where they return quite often to make sure it is still there.
They have both suddenly become very clandestine about the whole thing, and
look at us suspiciously if we go near it. Yet they will not sleep on it.
What are the reasons for this?

We had a similar reaction from our cats when my Nanna ( I Cupcake understand the generation thing here too ) gave me a model cat sleeping in Registered User a basket for christmas one year. Buster, My ginger tom, used to attack it Joined: Monday, 24th of May 2010, 09:23:40 every chance he got. Even climbing up onto shelves and into cupboards to Posts: 221 get at it. We eventually found out that these model cats have been banned Viewed 15544 times in the UK and NZ because they're made from REAL cat fur!!!
Maybe it is the same thing with your cats?

It probably feels wrong to them because it is real fur and it chiquita is also rabbit fur so they're just wary of it. Registered User Joined: Wednesday, 9th of June 2010, 12:55:48 Hope this helps Posts: 157 Viewed 3843 times

They might consider it their prey, but they might just consider cuddy buddy it their toy, and don't want anyone else playing with it. Registered User Joined: Tuesday, 18th of May 2010, 04:40:36 There is nothing wrong with having rabbit fur. Rabbits are prolific Posts: 993 breeders and are often bred for their fur and their meat. I had friends Viewed 11493 times up in Alaska that bred rabbits for this purpose.
But on the other note, rabbits and cats get along just fine in captivity,
I should know I've had both at the same time, both indoor.

First .. I am no expert here. That being said; cats are by Toe nibbler nature hunters, rodents are part of their natural instict to be seen as Registered User ''prey''. Rabbits are rodents. I suspect that they smell in the fur that Joined: Tuesday, 29th of June 2010, 22:01:00 it is prey .. & they think that they have defeated it. The pelt is a Posts: 847 ''prize'' for having conquered the prey. I had a vet tell me once that it Viewed 15110 times was healthy for my indoor cat to be able to see the birds who flocked to my
feeder . its energizing & mentally stimulating for the cat. But no harm is
done if the cat doesn't have access to actually attack the birds. I am
thinking that the rabbit fur does the same thing for ur cats.
